It was in 1975 that government of India established Kirti Nagar in Delhi region for the carpenters as wood was in abundance in the area. Now it's world famous for its carved wooden furniture.

More than fifty thousand woodcarvers and carpenters work in various workshops lining the streets of Kirti Nagar making different parts of furniture. They design or carve or sandpaper the wood. Final finishing, painting and polishing is done by the retailer who buys the products from these artisans.

These days its common for the craftsmen to make designs given by the retailer or the customers but many make their own designs based on the flora and fauna.
