Dolls have been made as toys and gifts from the very early times. They were made of cloth, stuffed or otherwise. A frame is first created in the required shape and it covered with straw, hay or cloth scraps before a cloth is stitched over the frame and the doll is clothed in a coustume. The face is either made from papier-mache or wood and features are painted on it.

The tradition of Kolu or Golu in Southern India has kept the art of doll making going over the centuries in these areas.
