Mata Ni Pachedi craft is practiced by very few artisan from Vaghari community, who settled in Ahmedabad more than 200 years ago. Since they were not allowed to enter the temples, these artisans started drawing and painting image of mother goddess ( mata/shakti, a form of goddess Durga) on a piece of cloth, hung it behind a temple and started worshiping. This textile came to be known as Mata Ni Pachedi.

This craft is very similar to the Kalamkari of south India. On a cotton hand spun rectangular cloth, an artist first hand paints the scenes depicting Mata in various forms and then fills it with stark colours – red, black and white. Each painting has various pictorial details, motifs, patterns with the central image being that of mother goddess.
